Everyone is familiar with polished granite surfaces but honed granite is becoming increasingly popular as well.
Polished granite has a glossy, highly reflective appearance which has a smooth and sleek look. The finish of honed granite has a flat to a low sheen, which gives the stone a softer look. Honed stone has had the final stages of polishing removed, to achieve a textured, matte-like finish. Granite can also be flame-textured for an aged, antique finish.
Honed and flame-textured granite can be slightly more difficult to clean and maintain. Although both surfaces are equally durable these granites have the reputation of showing stains easier as they are more porous than regular, polished granite and therefore more likely to absorb spills left on the surface for any great length. This can be avoided by protecting and cleaning your honed granite countertops with sealers and treatments to safeguard it and to ward off stains. Like all granite surfaces you must remain diligent about cleaning up spills quickly, especially when oily substances have been spilt on the honed surface. Be prepared to give it a thorough clean once in a while to preserve its look.
When it comes to making a decision about the finish of your granite countertop, it really will be a matter of personal preference. Some people will simply like a polished surface while others will prefer a honed finish. The mood of honed granite is very different but the finishes can be highly textured and attractive.
Remember because granite is a natural material there can even be a high degree of variation between colour and pattern within one single slab of granite. There are also some amazing natural characteristics that are part of the granite which you may like or dislike. Therefore it is best to familarise yourself with these natural characteristics before making your decision. |
